America is a dream destination of many travellers. And the first step towards turning their dreams into reality is securing a B1/B2 US tourist visa. But given the recent turn of events and America’s strict policies regarding visas has left even seasoned travellers with strong professional backgrounds in a fix! A Reddit user shared her experience of visa rejection, seeking suggestions for reapplication. The case took place recently at the Hyderabad US Consulate on September 15, 2025. A 31-year-old software developer working at a leading global fintech was denied a visa in just two minutes. Let’s find out what happenedThe Interview (incident)The woman reached the consulate and shared her documents with the visa officer. Her DS-160 form stated a 10-day vacation plan to the United States very clearly. Her travel history also showed stamps of several Southeast Asian countries and Georgia. The applicant, who got married six months ago, also showed her husband was a frequent business traveller. But he had not yet applied for his visa because of some relocation plans in the UK and will apply for his US visa later. The interview began as usual

Officer: “Why do you want to go to the US?”Woman: “For a vacation.”The officer then asked about the duration of the trip, marital status, travel history, and with whom she plans to travel with. She answered everything honestly, but a little issue occurred during a question about travel outside South and Central Asia. The applicant mentioned only Georgia. She forgot to mention her Seychelles visit, and misclassified the UAE as Central Asia. On hearing this, the officer quickly rejected the visa (and handed her the infamous blue denial letter citing 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.). Consular officer: “Unfortunately your visa cannot be processed at the moment.”What is 214(b) act

A 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act is the code which is used in mostly all non-immigrant visa refusals. It means that the officer was not convinced of strong ties to India sufficient to guarantee a return after the trip. But it does not mean wrongdoing or blacklisting the applicant. It just shows the applicant was not able to convince the officer and that he thought that the applicant might overstay in the US. What to doFinancial stability: It’s important to show that the applicant can afford the trip Strong ties to home country: The applicant have obligations—employment, family, property that can convince the officer of the applicant’s return to their home countryWhat went wrong (possibly)In this visa interview, the applicant had everything: a family, stable job and great travel resume. But the ambiguity around her husband’s plans must have created doubts in the mind of the officer (possibly).Reasons behind quick rejectionsUS visa officers are extremely experienced and can quickly catch uncertainty in answers. A few seconds of hesitation is enough to put them in doubt. Hyderabad office receives lakhs of applications monthly. So officers know their jobs. How to reapply

It is definitely discouraging. But travellers have successfully reapplied even after a 214(b) refusal. Tips on improving your second chance:Don’t repeat the mistake you made during the first appointmentMake sure you are clear of your travel plans so that you can explain the officer without any further hesitationYour itinerary should be clear with the number of days and the purpose.Present every detail with all valid bills and letters: hotels and any pre-booked tours if planned. If you plan to travel with your spouse or friends or family, be ready with clear answers about their visa status.Travel History
