Tatiana Schlossberg is the granddaughter of former US President John F. Kennedy and has revealed that she is suffering from terminal cancer and has been told she may have only a year to live. The 35 year old journalist and author disclosed her diagnosis in a personal essay for The New Yorker. Usually, the Kennedy descendant keeps her life private but wanted people to know about her condition.Schlossberg was born to Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg. Tatiana is part of one of America’s most famous political families. She is a writer focused on climate and environmental issues and also the mother of two young children with her husband, George Moran. Their daughter was born in May 2024, shortly before doctors discovered her illness. In her essay, “A Battle with My Blood,” Schlossberg explained that routine tests after childbirth revealed extremely high white-blood-cell levels. “A normal white-blood-cell count is around four to eleven thousand cells per microlitre. Mine was a hundred and thirty-one thousand cells per microlitre,” she wrote. What followed was a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia with a rare mutation called Inversion 3.She underwent months of chemotherapy and later received a stem cell transplant from her older sister, Rose. The transplant briefly put her into remission, but the cancer soon returned. Her doctor gave the final verdict: he could keep her alive “for a year, maybe.”Schlossberg also used her essay to criticise her mother’s cousin, health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, for cutting research funding. “I watched as Bobby cut nearly a half billion dollars for research into mRNA vaccines, technology that could be used against certain cancers,” she wrote. Her family has been at her side throughout her treatment. “They have held my hand unflinchingly while I have suffered,” she said. Her siblings include Rose, 37, and Jack, 32, JFK’s only grandson, who recently announced plans to run for Congress in New York. Her diagnosis comes as the Kennedy family continues to grapple with decades of personal tragedy. The assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, the plane crash that killed John F. Kennedy Jr., and the recent deaths of Saoirse Kennedy Hill, Mary Richardson Kennedy and Maeve Kennedy McKean have all left deep scars on the family. Tatiana’s illness now joins a long list of painful losses the Kennedys have endured.
