Hospitals are often where the most crucial moments of life unfold, from first breaths to life-saving recoveries. Behind every door lies a story of science, skill, and human care. Yet, in a world with more than 2 lakh hospitals spread across continents, finding the ones that set global benchmarks in excellence can be daunting. That’s where the World’s Best Hospitals 2025 report, published by Newsweek in partnership with Statista, steps in. The annual ranking puts the spotlight on institutions that consistently deliver exceptional outcomes.Built on a mix of expert insights, patient experiences, and quality data, this year’s list goes beyond reputation; it measures what truly defines the best in modern medicine.

Where did India stand on the list?
India’s healthcare system found strong representation once again. Leading the national list is the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. It is followed by Medanta–The Medicity (Gurugram) and PGIMER, Chandigarh.Christian Medical College, Vellore, and Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, round out the top five. Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital, Breach Candy, and Hinduja Hospital also made the top ten, alongside Jaslok Hospital and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. These hospitals not only serve millions but also contribute to India’s growing reputation for medical expertise and compassion-driven care.
The ranking is not a popularity contest. It’s built on four core pillars:
- Expert recommendations: Tens of thousands of doctors, hospital managers, and healthcare professionals from 30 countries were surveyed. They recommended hospitals both within and outside their home nations, ensuring a wide lens of credibility.
- Patient satisfaction: Real-world experience matters. Data from patient surveys, covering satisfaction with treatment, hygiene, and overall experience, played a significant role.
- Hospital quality metrics: Objective measures such as infection control, patient-to-staff ratios, and treatment outcomes were examined using public datasets.
- Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs): Hospitals were evaluated on how well they measure patient well-being post-treatment through validated questionnaires.
Each factor carried a specific weight: peer recommendations (40%), patient experience (17.5%), quality metrics (37.5%), and PROMs implementation (5%).This year’s edition also included a bibliometric score, which reflected the scientific impact and global research contribution of each hospital.
Why rankings like these matter
For patients, families, and policymakers, rankings provide something of transparency in healthcare. They highlight where excellence is not only claimed but also measured. Hospitals that score well typically have strong safety records, high patient satisfaction, and active involvement in global medical research. However, it’s equally important to note that scores are comparable only within each country, not across borders. A hospital ranked 90 in India cannot be directly compared to one with the same score in Germany, as data sources and health systems differ.Behind every statistic is a story of doctors, nurses, and patients striving together. Hospitals that consistently rank high tend to share one trait, a culture that values patients as partners in their own care. From the Mayo Clinic’s patient-first philosophy to AIIMS’s dedication to equitable healthcare, the world’s best hospitals show that compassion and quality can go hand in hand.Disclaimer: This article is based on the World’s Best Hospitals 2025 ranking published by Newsweek in collaboration with Statista. The rankings reflect data collected between January and December 2024 and should not be the sole basis for medical decisions. Individual needs, specialities, and doctor consultations remain essential in choosing appropriate healthcare.
