Volkswagen is set to utilise Xpeng’s autonomous driving technology, XNGP, into its upcoming electric vehicles for the Chinese market starting in 2026. The first model to feature this system will be a mid-size SUV jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng, according to a report by CarNewsChina.Initially, Volkswagen’s local software division, Cariad China, was leading the development of autonomous systems for the brand’s EVs. However, the unit will now serve as an integrator, bringing Xpeng’s ready-to-use autonomous technology into Volkswagen’s future lineup. This collaboration builds on Volkswagen’s 2023 investment of 700 million euros in Xpeng, through which it acquired a 4.99% stake in the Chinese EV maker. Earlier this year, both companies confirmed that two co-developed mid-size SUVs are in the pipeline, with market launches planned for 2026.
What is Xpeng’s XNGP tech?
At the heart of this collaboration is Xpeng’s XNGP (Intelligent Driving System): a next-generation, vision-based driver-assistance suite designed to function without high-definition maps. The system uses cameras, sensors, and AI to perceive surroundings in real time, enabling autonomous navigation through city streets, highways, and even unfamiliar or rural routes.XNGP is said to have the ability to handle tricky driving situations like roundabouts, tight lanes, and U-turns, making it a strong competitor to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system. It runs on computers and Xpeng’s own Turing chip, allowing it to improve continuously through software updates.
