After years of speculation and anticipation, Tesla has officially made its debut in the Indian market. The American EV giant has launched the Model Y SUV as its first offering in the country, alongside opening its very first showroom in the heart of Mumbai, at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Interested customers can book the car online, and the deliveries for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant of the Tesla Model Y are expected to begin within this quarter. At the same time, the RWD Long Range version is slated to arrive starting in October 2025.

The new Tesla Model Y will be offered in two variants – Standard and Long Range – priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively. Since the vehicle is being imported into India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), it carries a significantly higher price tag, largely due to steep import duties. In the US, prices for the Tesla Model Y start at $44,990 (approximately Rs 38.63 lakh) in the U.S., 263,500 yuan (around Rs 31.57 lakh) in China, and €45,970 (roughly Rs 46.09 lakh) in Germany. In comparison, the Indian pricing is notably higher, making it one of the most expensive markets for the Model Y.

The India-spec Tesla Model Y comes loaded with a host of premium features. It includes a large 15.3-inch infotainment touchscreen at the centre, ventilated and heated power-adjustable front seats, and rear seats that are both heated and electrically foldable in a two-way configuration. Passengers also get an 8-inch screen at the rear, a 9-speaker sound system, ambient interior lighting, dedicated air vents with electric controls for both front and back rows, and a panoramic glass roof. The vehicle is equipped with eight external cameras to support advanced driver-assistance functions.

As for range, the Standard Model Y delivers up to 500 km of WLTP-rated driving range and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range version stretches its range to 622 km (WLTP) and completes the same sprint in a quicker 5.6 seconds. Despite the difference in battery output, both versions come with a rear-wheel-drive setup and has a claimed top speed of 201 km/h.

Tesla has yet to officially reveal the exact specifications for the Model Y’s battery capacity and electric motor output for the Indian market. As standard, the SUV is offered in Stealth Grey, while customers can choose from additional colour options such as Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quick Silver, and Ultra Red. However, these premium paint choices come at an added cost, ranging up to Rs 1.85 lakh, depending on the selected shade. The Model Y’s cabin comes finished in an all-black theme as standard, but buyers can upgrade to a dual-tone black and white interior for an additional Rs 95,000.
In the Indian market, the Tesla Model Y enters a competitive segment, taking on strong contenders like the Kia EV6, BYD Sealion 7, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and both the Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. Tesla offers a 4-year/80,000 km warranty on the vehicle itself, while the battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years or up to 1,92,000 km, whichever comes first.
