Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently said that the United States will not survive without secure elections. The tech billionaire was responding to a post by Republican Senator Rick Scott that promoted new legislation aimed at tightening voting rules. “If we’ve learned anything over the last few years, it’s that securing our elections is crucial. I’m leading the SAVE Act with my good friend, @BasedMikeLee, to make sure only U.S. citizens get to vote in our elections. This is common sense,” Scott wrote in an X (formerly Twitter) post.Elon Musk quoted the post, writing “America will die without secure elections”.
What is America’s SAVE Act
The SAVE Act, short for Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, aims to require proof of US citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. Supporters of the bill argue that it is necessary to prevent illegal voting and protect the integrity of elections in the US. Critics, however, have said similar measures could make it harder for some eligible voters to cast their ballots.Musk has increasingly commented on US political issues in recent years, often using X to engage with lawmakers and public figures. His views on elections, free speech, and government policy have frequently sparked debate online. The US election system has remained a contentious issue since the 2020 presidential election, with lawmakers divided over how to balance voter access and election security. Several states have passed or proposed laws related to voter identification, mail-in ballots, and voter registration. The SAVE Act is currently being discussed in Congress and would need approval from both chambers before becoming law.
