Sunny Deol’s Border 2 has opened to a thunderous response at the Indian box office, outperforming the opening weekend numbers of last year’s runaway blockbuster Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by names like Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt and R Madhavan. After months of hype surrounding the sequel to one of Bollywood’s most iconic war dramas, Border 2 has delivered a three-day total that confirms audience curiosity but the bigger question now is whether it can sustain the marathon the way Dhurandhar did.Border 2 posted a Rs 30 crore opening on Friday, a strong number for a non-holiday action drama driven almost entirely by star power and franchise nostalgia. Collections accelerated sharply on Saturday to Rs 36.5 crore, marking a healthy +21.67% growth. But the story of the weekend was Sunday, where positive word-of-mouth, multiplex surge and mass belt momentum drove collections to Rs 54.5 crore, registering a massive +49.32% jump. The film’s opening weekend total stands at a robust Rs 121 crore net.In comparison, Dhurandhar ,which at the time had opened against modest expectations, collected Rs 28 crore on Friday, Rs 32 crore on Saturday (+14.29%), and Rs 43 crore on Sunday (+34.38%), resulting in a Rs 103 crore weekend. On pure weekend math, Border 2 has comfortably edged past Dhurandhar, surpassing it by Rs 18 crore and delivering stronger day-to-day momentum. However, the comparison becomes interesting precisely because the two films represent very different kinds of journeys. Dhurandhar’s biggest feat wasn’t its opening weekend, but its sheer longevity. While Border 2 is just three days old. Dhurandhar went on to unleash one of the greatest box-office runs in Hindi cinema history, ultimately becoming the biggest Hindi film of all time with a staggering Rs 833.4 crore India net total , an unimaginable multiple on its opening. For now, Border 2 enjoys bragging rights for beating Dhurandhar on opening weekend, but the race that matters has only just begun. The industry will be watching the Republic Day and weekday numbers very closely they will decide whether Border 2 becomes a historic runner, or simply a powerful sprinter.Border 2 is directed by Anurag Singh and features Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Paramvir Cheema, Mona Singh, Anya Singh, Medha Rana and Sonam Bajwa.
