Swami Vivekananda, one of the famous spiritual Gurus and philosophers, who is followed by many. He taught about life, destiny and karma but he was against the superstition. “If a star disturbs my life, it would not be worth a cent” – this quote explains that how much he was against the superstition and psychological slavery. Now, we will understand the meaning of this statement in detail.
Swami Vivekananda’s view on Astrology:
“If a star disturbs my life, it would not be worth a cent” – this is one of the most powerful thoughts by Swami Vivekananda on astrology that represents fearless outlook towards life. Though the exact statement was – “If a star disturbs my life, it would not be worth a cent. You will find that astrology and all these mystical things are generally signs of a weak mind; therefore as soon as they are becoming prominent in our minds, we should see a physician, take good food, and rest.”These lines show that he fully neglected astrology in his life and believed only on karma. But on the other hand he was basically against that superstition and how we become dependent only on astrology and stars. So, he basically opposed the fatalistic dependence on astrology. For example; if something goes wrong in life then we start blaming our stars, which is not right thing.
The Idea of Astrology
Swami Vivekananda never disrespected any belief associated with Vedas, cosmic order and stars but he was against the idea of misusing the astrology to instill fear, anxiety and take an advantage of helplessness. He meant that astrology should not be misused to make people weak because once you have a fear inside you then that fear destroys your self confidence. He was not rejecting the cosmic law but rejecting the idea of making people fool by using astrology. He never dinied the law of karma but he opposed that planets control your life and you become powerless, when you see your horoscope for example; if your horoscope says that you can not achieve your goals, then automatically you stop working hard to achieve that and that’s the biggest problem of astrology.
Your karma can change your destiny
According to Swami Vivekananda, karma is everything and karma has the ability to change your destiny also. He believed that your efforts, hard work, character, kindness, and awareness can shape your destiny. The moment you become dependent on astrology and stars then you become helpless, weak and stop trying for your goals. He also believed that a strong mind rises above circumstances. You inner strength and power is everything, understand that and grow.
Stars influence the body and mind not soul
As per Swami Vivekananda, the planets, stars can influence your body and mind but not your soul because your soul is untouched. He taught that when you identify your soul and spiritual power and start believing in that then you naturally don’t give importance to your horoscope and external forces lose that authority to disturb your soul and inner self.
