USA Cricket has termed its suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as one of the toughest moments in its history, acknowledging the uncertainty and disappointment it has caused within the cricket community in the United States. The ICC had last month imposed an immediate suspension on USA Cricket following a detailed review of its operations and consultations with multiple stakeholders over the past year. The decision was based on what the ICC described as “repeated and continued breaches” of membership obligations under its constitution. In a statement, USA Cricket said, “The recent suspension of USA Cricket by the International Cricket Council has been one of the most difficult moments in our history. It has caused uncertainty and disappointment for players, members, volunteers, and supporters. Yet this moment must not be mistaken for dysfunction. It is the result of difficult but necessary decisions taken to protect the game, the organisation, and the future of cricket in the United States.” The ICC board, while enforcing the suspension, confirmed that the United States’ national teams would still be allowed to participate in ICC events, including preparations for cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. USA Cricket had earlier been placed “on notice” during the ICC’s 2024 Annual General Meeting for failing to meet membership compliance requirements. The board was given 12 months to address those concerns and to conduct “free and fair elections” along with implementing wider governance reforms. However, progress was deemed insufficient by the ICC, leading to the current suspension. Following the move, the management of USA’s national teams will now be overseen temporarily by the ICC and its appointed representatives to ensure players continue to receive support and that Olympic preparations are not disrupted.
