In the era of action packed films and franchise cinema Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara emerged as a cinematic surprise, a romantic drama starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda has not only charmed audiences but also stormed past major Bollywood and pan-India giants at the box office. With a 13-day total of Rs 273.50 crore, Saiyaara has officially overtaken RRR’s Hindi version (Rs 272.78 crore) and Dhoom 3 (Rs 271.07 crore) to become the 22nd highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, a milestone few anticipated when the film was first announced.
Released with moderate buzz and strong music backing , something Mohit Suri is known for Saiyaara opened to a healthy Rs 21.5 crore on its first Friday. What followed was a textbook display of word-of-mouth magic. Saturday saw a nearly 21% growth, and Sunday exploded to Rs 35.75 crore, giving the film a Rs 83.25 crore opening weekend. For a film led by newcomers, this was nothing short of extraordinary. By the end of Week 1 the film had minted Rs 172.75 crore. Given the way the film performed in first week and postponement of Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur’s Son of Sardaar 2 to 1st August one expected Saiyaara to score big in the second week as well and the film didn’t disappoint. The film earned almost Rs 75 crore over the weekend. While Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 2 saw a predictable dip, the film still managed to collect significant numbers Rs 9.25 crore, Rs 10 crore and Rs 7 crore ( early estimates ) respectively. Thus taking the total collection of the film to Rs 273.50 and thereby leapfrogging SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan and Jr NTR’s RRR’s Hindi version (Rs 272.78 Cr) and Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 (Rs 271.07 Cr).For director Mohit Suri, Saiyaara marks a true return to form. Best known for emotional musical hits like Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain, Suri had hit a creative lull in recent years. With Saiyaara, he married his signature soulful romanticism with action and scale, supported by a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack and crisp storytelling.Suri’s gamble on newcomers also paid off — Ahaan Panday, previously an unknown name in box office circuits, became an overnight heartthrob.
