A petition has been floated to counter President Donald Trump’s aggression to grab Greenland, claiming that California should then come to Denmark. The petition is satirical but is gaining support and already collected around 290K signatures. They said Trump might even agree to sell Dem-ruled California as he is not California’s biggest fan, and if he’s given the right price, the businessman Trump would be willing to part with it. “Have you ever looked at a map and thought, “You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.” Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality. Let’s buy California from Donald Trump! Yes, you heard that right. California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen,” the pitch said.
This is, however, not a new petition and was first reported in February 2025 as Trump expressed interest in acquiring Greenland for the first time in 2019 and renewed the call soon after taking charge last year.

But now that Trump’s Greenland ambition has reached a point of no return, the petition has resurfaced. They also detailed why they chose California and sunlight is the first reason as Denmark’s weather is damp. Tech bros, avocado toast, protection of the free world, and Disneyland all come after sunlight. They said they would rename Disneyland as ‘Hans Christian Andersenland’.
What’s the ‘tremendous plan’?
“Crowdfunding Goal of $1 trillion (give or take a few billion). That’s just 200,000 kroner from every Dane. Skip a few lattes, and you’re golden,” the petition said. “It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation, so California will become New Denmark. Los Angeles? More like Løs Ångeles,” it said.
Petition organizer is not Danish
Petition organizer Xavier Dutoit is not Danish, but the idea came when he was holidaying in the Philippines. The Swiss-French national said he took help from his Danish friends to give it the final shape. “While on vacation in the Philippines, I was at a bar with some friends, and overheard a rather loud American tourist discussing Donald Trump’s bid to buy Greenland from Denmark. That American didn’t seem to grasp how unhinged and absurd it was for any country’s President, especially in a stable democracy that the USA claims to be, to offer or threaten to take over another sovereign country’s territory. The idea that came to me was to start a satirical campaign proclaiming that Denmark was interested in buying California from Trump—purely to make a point about how absurd Trump’s claims to Greenland really were,” Dutoit told Newsweek.
