Mark Sanchez, 38, who played in the NFL for 10 years before retiring in 2019, got into a violent altercation with a 69-year-old truck driver, Perry Tole, outside a hotel in Indianapolis. Authorities say the fight started over a parking dispute but quickly turned physical. Tole, who works for a company called Restaurant Technologies, allegedly sprayed Sanchez with pepper spray and then stabbed him in the chest. Tole claimed he acted in self-defense. Police reports also suggest that Sanchez appeared intoxicated, with witnesses noting slurred speech and the smell of alcohol.Sanchez was initially arrested on charges including battery resulting in serious injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry of a vehicle. The altercation led to Sanchez being hospitalized with multiple stab wounds, but the nature of his injuries was not disclosed in detail. Tole reportedly suffered a severe facial laceration in the fight.

Sanchez, now recovering from his injuries, spoke publicly for the first time on Sunday. In an emotional statement, he thanked the first responders and medical staff that helped save his life, as well as law enforcement for their role in the incident. “Right now I am just kind of focused on my recovery and I just want to thank the first responders, Eskenazi hospital, Marion County sheriff and the Indianapolis Police Department, metro PD,” Sanchez told local station FOX59/CBS4. “But I’m focused on my recovery, and I just want to see my wife, I want to see my son, my two baby girls.”However, he declined to comment on the charges against him, saying, “There will be a day to answer all these questions, and unfortunately, today is not that day. I guess the real thing here is I just want to thank Dr. (Lindsey) Mossler, the surgeon. She saved my life. So, I’m grateful for that.”Despite the severity of the charges he faces, Sanchez was permitted to leave Indiana on Sunday. He was required to be fingerprinted and photographed before being released. A pretrial conference has been set for November 5 in Indianapolis, where further legal proceedings will unfold.
