Mitchell said they were flying to Florida to spend the afternoon with the Mitchells. “Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane… because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us,” Mitchell, who posts under the pseudonym Cleetus McFarland, said in a Facebook post. “We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this.”
How the plane crashed
The crash was reported around 10.15am at the airport from where the plane took off a short while ago. The plane was returning to the airport for some emergency, which is not known yet. “Like we said, at approximately 10:15 a.m., we got a report of a jet that crashed off the end of the runway on the east end. By time I came out, it was fully engulfed. We’ve had multiple agencies that have come. The FAA arrived at about 12 o’clock today,” airport manager John Ferguson said. According to FlightAware tracking, the plane with the tag N257BW took off from Statesville Regional Airport with a destination of Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport in Florida. The plane was scheduled to be in Florida for less than an hour, before heading to Treasure Cay in the Bahamas. It was then scheduled to head to Fort Lauderdale, before returning to Statesville at a scheduled arrival time of 8:22 pm.The flight path of the ill-fated Cessna 550 Citation showed that it had taken off, the plane immediately turned around and tried to land. It crashed on the landing attempt back at the airport.
Weather report on Biffle’s plane crash
“Adverse weather conditions were reported in the vicinity of Statesville Regional Airport around the time of the plane crash. Heavy drizzle and a cloud ceiling near 1,200 feet were reported at 10:15 a.m. The cloud ceiling had reportedly lowered to around 400 feet, with heavy rain reducing visibility to less than 2 miles at 10:30 a.m. Weather conditions are often a critical factor that investigators carefully review after a plane crash.
