
NEW DELHI: Heavy rains lashed parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday morning, potentially affecting ongoing Durga Puja celebrations and Ramlila events across the city. The sudden downpour caused waterlogging in several areas, leading to traffic congestion and disruption of festive activities.
In response to the downpour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its rain alert from ‘yellow’ to ‘orange’, indicating the possibility of moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph over the next few hours.The heavy downpour also led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, causing traffic snarls and delays during the morning rush hour across parts of Delhi-NCR. The national capital has been experiencing unusually high temperatures this September. On Monday, the maximum temperature soared to 37.5°C, while Sunday recorded 38.1°C, making it the hottest September day in two years. For context, Delhi hit 38.6°C on September 5, 2023.The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky throughout the day with light rain or drizzle likely to continue. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 35°C, while the minimum was recorded at 28.7°C, which is 5.4 degrees above normal. Relative humidity stood at 74% as of 8:30 am.Rainfall was reported across several parts of Delhi, including Talkatora Road and Feroz Shah Road, with visuals showing heavy downpours disrupting routine movement.Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) stood at 114 at 8 am, falling under the ‘moderate’ category, according to the IndiGo issues travel advisoryAmid the rains, airline carrier IndiGo issued a travel advisory on X (formerly Twitter), warning of potential delays:“There’s a heavy downpour over #Delhi at the moment, causing some temporary disruption to flight schedules.If you’re travelling today, please be aware of potential delays and allow additional time for your journey, especially with traffic moving slower than usual.Please check your flight status on our app or website before leaving. Remember, we’re here if you need anything along the way.”Travellers are advised to plan accordingly and stay updated on flight schedules.
