Bachelor of Science (BS) medical students who studied abroad before the FMGL 2021 rules now face a clear requirement from the NMC. The commission has said they must complete one additional year of internship in India before registration. If you are one of these students, this applies to you directly. The clarification follows representations received by the regulator and aims to standardise clinical exposure. What the NMC corrigendum saysThe NMC issued a corrigendum through the Under Graduate Medical Education Board, or UGMEB. It continues an earlier public notice and clarifies eligibility for students enrolled in BS courses at foreign medical institutes.Students who took admission or were studying before publication of the FMGL 2021 regulations are covered. The mode of study does not matter, as both online and physical attendance are included.Screening Test rules remain applicableAccording to the corrigendum, these students will be governed by the Screening Test Regulation, 2002. Other conditions of the earlier public notice and later clarifications remain unchanged. The commission described the move as a one time exemption limited to this specific group. It does not alter requirements for students admitted after the FMGL 2021 framework.Mandatory internship in IndiaDespite the exemption, the NMC has made a one year compulsory rotating internship in India mandatory. This internship must follow CRMI standards to ensure proper clinical training. The regulator said the internship will provide exposure to the Indian healthcare system. It also aligns graduates with national treatment protocols and patient care standards.Circulation and complianceThe order was addressed to principals and deans of all medical colleges across India. State and Union Territory medical education departments and councils were also informed. The document was approved by the competent authority and signed by senior NMC officials. It has been uploaded on the official NMC website for reference.Key dates and reference numbersThe public notice referred to in the corrigendum was issued on December 07, 2023. The clarification followed an NMC meeting held on December 16, 2025.The corrigendum itself was dated December 30, 2025 and circulated a day later. File and computer numbers were included for official record and tracking. The NMC said all concerned institutions must take note and comply. This direction applies uniformly and does not change any other notified provisions. The order relates only to eligible BS students abroad and does not extend benefits beyond the defined category as specified by NMC rules.
