Starring Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty and Akshaye Khanna, it stayed in people’s hearts for years. Now, in 2026, a sequel is coming, ‘Border 2’. While the first movie was about the Battle of Longewala, this one is based on Operation Chengiz Khan, which started the Indo-Pak war in 1971.
What was Operation Chengiz Khan?
On December 3, 1971, Pakistan launched Operation Chengiz Khan, named after the famous warrior Genghis Khan. It was a surprise attack by the Pakistan Air Force on several Indian airbases and radar stations. This operation marked the start of the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The main aim was to weaken the Indian Air Force and control the skies, taking inspiration from Israel’s 1967 strike on Egypt and Syria. A total of 11 Indian bases, including Amritsar, Pathankot, Ambala, and Jodhpur, were targeted to stop India from supporting the Bangladesh Liberation War.
India’s swift retaliation
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi took the attacks as a formal declaration of war and immediately directed Indian forces to strike back. The Indian Air Force launched counterattacks that very night, followed by large-scale air operations the next morning.
