The Detroit Lions have locked in one of their biggest stars for the long haul. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson has agreed to a four-year, $180 million extension, with $141 million guaranteed — the highest ever for a non-quarterback in NFL history. This deal keeps the 2022 No. 2 overall pick in Detroit through the 2030 season. Hutchinson has quickly made a name for himself as one of the league’s top pass rushers. He had 9.5 sacks as a rookie and 11.5 in his second season. In 2023, he was on pace for Defensive Player of the Year with 7.5 sacks in five games before a broken leg ended his season. After recovering from surgery, he’s back in top form this year, already recording six sacks and leading the league with 48 total pressures through seven games.
Aidan Hutchinson signs huge extension with Detroit Lions
Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke of Hutchinson’s impact on the team and said, “I don’t know if I can really put a value on that, because I don’t know if there’s a big enough number. I mean, he’s extremely valuable. The number of things that he’s able to do for us in the run and the pass game, it takes up — he pulls a lot of slack, man. You talk about pulling your weight, he pulls his weight and then some. He requires a lot of resources offensively, which helps everybody else out. “He is a complete football player,” Campbell continued. “He does it all. He’s disruptive, he’s violent, he’s high motor, he’s crafty, he’s explosive, he’s tough, he’s competitive. He does it all.”
A deal built with the league’s top edge rushers in mind
Before this extension, Hutchinson was set to stay with the Lions through 2026 under his rookie contract and fifth-year option. This offseason, top defensive ends have been signing huge deals, with stars like Myles Garrett, T.J. Watt, and Micah Parsons setting new benchmarks. Lions GM Brad Holmes explained how the market influenced Hutchinson’s deal and said, “Look, it is what it is. We had it in that range, kind of already, when we do our future planning and budgeting. But, then, obviously, when it goes up, it just goes up. That’s just what you’ve got to prepare for. I don’t know what it will end up being. The difficult part about our job, but we work really hard in terms of the prediction forecasting of that market. He’s just one of many that we’ve had to budget.”
Detroit’s long-term strategy to keep homegrown stars
Hutchinson is part of a broader effort by Detroit to lock in key players. The Lions have also extended contracts for Jared Goff, Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Alim McNeill, Kerby Joseph, and several others — most drafted by Holmes. Next offseason, the team will face new extension decisions for 2023 draftees like Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Brian Branch, and Jack Campbell. Also read: Cam Skattebo injury update: Rookie suffers brutal dislocated ankle with fibula fracture and ligament damage, faces challenging recovery
