Recently, several public figures addressing the threat of identity theft and misuse have knocked on the court doors. One such star is Suniel Shetty, who reached the Bombay High Court seeking protection of his personality rights.
Suniel Shetty’s appeal to the Bombay Court
The ‘Border’ actor has opted for a legal route to ensure his safety against the deepfake technology. He has requested the honourable court to restrain the circulation of his and his family’s deepfake images and videos across all social media platforms. He urged the judge to pass an order to take down all the unauthorized pictures from the commercial websites. This includes gambling and astrology platforms. He further requested an action against products that have been using his name and picture without his consent for sales.According to Live Law, Suniel Shetty’s matter was heard on Friday by Justice Arif S Doctor. Representing the actor was Senior Advocate Birendra Saraf said, “There are deepfake photographs and videos circulating, some showing him with his grandchild.” “Real estate and astrology websites are using his image. A gambling website has also featured him. None of this is with his permission,” he continued.
Fake agents claim to represent Suniel Shetty
The lawyer also told the court that there are several fake social media accounts in the actor’s name. Many fake agents claim to be Shetty’s representative and seek brand endorsements. He highlighted that in some cases, platforms identified that the content was fake, yet didn’t remove it. Upon hearing this, Justice Doctor remarked on the threats of AI and said, “This AI and social media… if not regulated, it’s scary what people can do with it,” he said.The petition includes a request for a John Doe order to prevent unknown entities from misusing Suniel Shetty’s images.
