When it comes to carbohydrates, not all are created equal.
Some carbohydrates are refined, which are quickly digested. These are called low-quality carbs that increase the risk of chronic diseases by spiking blood sugar. White bread, white rice, sugary snacks and beverages, and starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn are low-quality carbs.
In contrast, carbs rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants support heart-health, maintain cognitive function and stabilize blood sugar. These are termed as high-quality carbohydrates or smart carbs. Whole grains like oats, quinoa, fruits and vegetables such as berries and leafy greens come under smart carbs. The Harvard study highlights that high-quality carbs are the one that support healthy aging.
