Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh’s relationship has always intrigued fans and the media alike. Their story began when Saif was set to make his acting debut in Rahul Rawail’s Bekhudi. Though the film didn’t materialize for him—he was eventually replaced—it turned out to be a life-altering moment for another reason: he met Amrita Singh. At the time, she was already an established name in Bollywood, while Saif was just stepping into the industry. The two quickly fell in love and surprised everyone by getting married in 1991—before Saif had even debuted on screen.Like many high-profile marriages, theirs experienced its fair share of turbulence and ultimately ended in a much-publicized separation. Years later, Saif has now reflected on how profoundly Amrita influenced his early years—both personally and professionally. Appearing on Kajol and Twinkle Khanna’s talk show Too Much with Kajol & Twinkle, the actor shared, “I’ve spoken about it a lot, and obviously, 21 is a young age, and things change. We know that things didn’t work out, but apart from having two wonderful, wonderful children, I don’t think I’ve said before how important Amrita was in my life, to help me understand my way through the film industry, as well as understand quite a few things. Her contribution and help at that time were quite invaluable. It’s a pity things didn’t work out.”
Kajol resonded to him saying, “But she brought you up well.” To this, Saif replied, “There were some really important and learning years, and like I said, she’s a wonderful mom. But I’m very lucky; I think my ex-wife and I get along well enough. We usually speak about important things, and usually when I’m in a hospital bed.” He added with a laugh, “Which is actually quite often. So yeah, it’s a regular kind of contact.” Meanwhile, fashion designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla recently revisited the couple’s hush-hush wedding, which they had witnessed firsthand. In a chat with Namrata Zakaria on her YouTube channel, the duo described how the ceremony was kept a secret from both families and even involved some last-minute improvisation. They revealed that both a maulvi and a Sikh priest were present, and Amrita was even given a new name during the proceedings.“There was also a sardarji pandit sitting there. She got ready in whatever fit her, because there was no time… Fortunately, from her mother, she got some fantastic jewellery. Saif wore a bandhgala. Then, the maulvi said, ‘What is your name? Your name has to start with A.’ All four of us started looking at each other, and the pandit says, ‘Aziza’. That was a runaway bride, it was insane. Driving back, her mother called her… Eventually, they took it in their stride.”Today, Saif is happily married to Kareena Kapoor Khan, and together they have two sons, Taimur and Jehangir. From his earlier marriage with Amrita, Saif shares daughter Sara Ali Khan and son Ibrahim Ali Khan—both steadily making their mark in Bollywood. Professionally, Saif has wrapped up Rahul Dholakia’s upcoming film, is currently shooting Haiwaan with Priyadarshan, and is gearing up to begin Race 4 early next year.
