
HYDERABAD: In what is one of the biggest investments in the pharma sector in India in recent years, American giant Eli Lilly and Company is injecting over $1 billion (approx Rs 8,900 crore) in setting up new contract manufacturing facilities in India over the next few years. This includes a new manufacturing and quality hub in Hyderabad.Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy and industries minister D Sridhar Babu met Lilly’s global team led by Patrik Jonsson, executive vice president and president Lilly International, Eli Lilly and Company at the integrated command control centre in Hyderabad on Monday. Revanth said despite Lilly being wooed by multiple states, it chose Telangana due to the state’s favourable ecosystem in terms of availability of highly skilled manpower, infrastructure, and government support.The new hub, which comes less than a couple of months after it unveiled its global innovation and tech hub in Hyderabad, will offer advanced technical capabilities and oversight for its contract manufacturing network across India, Eli Lilly said on Monday. The latest investment will strengthen its manufacturing and supply capabilities to support its evolving portfolio by leveraging India’s highly skilled talent pool, it added.The company has committed over $55 billion since 2020 to build, expand, and acquire facilities globally. It said these new facilities will help it develop and manufacture new medicines to treat ailments such as diabetes and obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and autoimmune conditions. The pharma giant said it will immediately begin recruitment for the new hub for roles such as engineers, chemists, analytical scientists, quality control and assurance professionals, and management positions in Hyderabad.While Lilly refused to divulge the locations for the new contract manufacturing facilities, Telangana government said the investments will be made entirely in Telangana. The company will expand not just its manufacturing and global medicine supply capacity in Hyderabad but will also create job opportunities for youth.The company said its manufacturing presence in the country will allow it to scale up quickly.
