
Munawar Faruqui, stand-up comedian and reality show host, narrowly escaped a deadly plot when two shooters linked to the Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar-Virender Charan gang were arrested in Delhi on Thursday. The arrest came after a gunfight on Jaitpur-Kalindi Kunj Road.
Shooters reveal instructions from gang leaders abroad
According to a NDTV report, Munawar Faruqui became a target of gangsters Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar, who allegedly planned to kill him over jokes on Hindu gods. The plot was foiled when the police’s counter-intelligence unit intercepted the two shooters in Delhi, preventing what could have been a planned attack on Faruqui.The report revealed, during interrogation, Rahul and Sahil revealed that they had come to Delhi to target Munawar Faruqui on the instructions of Godara and Brar, both of whom are currently abroad. The shooters had previously conducted recces of Faruqui in Mumbai and Bengaluru. They had even attempted an attack in Bengaluru, which failed after the comedian switched cars.
Police intercepted the shooters following intelligence inputs
According to PTI, the men, identified as Rahul, 29, from Panipat, and Sahil, 37, from Bhiwani, Haryana, were allegedly tasked with targeting the comedian. The accused were intercepted by the Special Cell’s Counter Intelligence Unit following specific intelligence. “A professional trap was laid after intelligence indicated the movement of the two shooters in the Jaitpur-Kalindi Kunj area. Considering the strong apprehension that they were armed and aggressive, our team moved in to apprehend them. In the exchange of fire, both were injured but overpowered,” a police officer said.Both men were shot in the legs during the encounter, later taken to hospital, and the motorcycle they were riding along with their firearms were seized.
Gang instructions reportedly came from abroad
Investigators said the shooters had been taking instructions from foreign-based gangster Rohit Godara, who is associated with Canada-based Goldy Brar and absconding criminal Virender Charan. The duo were allegedly mobilised to carry out targeted killings in Delhi-NCR. They had also conducted reconnaissance in Mumbai and Bengaluru to track Faruqui’s movements.
Gang reportedly seeks to influence celebrity spaces
“The syndicate has been attempting to expand its influence in celebrity spaces, and Faruqui was among its long-standing targets. The gang had earlier plotted attacks on other celebrities, including the recent firing incident outside actress Disha Patani’s Bareilly residence,” a police officer said.
Police continue investigation into other gang members
An investigation is currently underway to identify other members of the syndicate and their targets, police said.
