
Ranbir Kapoor is currently working on Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana,’ in which he will be seen portraying the role of Lord Ram. It is one of the most anticipated films and is set to release in two parts—in Diwali 2026 and 2027. But the actor had to choose between Nitesh’s directorial and another ambitious project—a biopic of legendary singer Kishore Kumar. And filmmaker Anurag Basu shared that it was tough for RK to choose between the two.

Filmmaker Anurag Basu, in an interview with BBC News, shared that Ranbir Kapoor had to let go of one of the two films due to scheduling problems. He said, “Ranbir had a tough choice in life—Kishore Kumar or ‘Ramayana.’ It was very difficult for him. In the end, he chose ‘Ramayana,’ and I think it was the right decision.”Basu, who has worked with Ranbir in ‘Barfi’ and ‘Jagga Jasoos,’ went on to say that they keep trying to collaborate on a project, “but it’s just not happening.”

As Ranbir Kapoor left the project, it is being reported that Aamir Khan is being considered to step in for the role of the vocal legend. But the filmmaker didn’t confirm anything on the same.While talking to Mid-Day, Anurag Basu said, “Until everything is finalised and the contract is signed, I don’t think I should speak on it.”Reportedly, the project has been in the development stages for almost a decade, and hence, Basu said that he doesn’t want to jinx it. He said, “I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it happens this time and I go on set with the story.”

Anurag Basu’s film ‘Metro… In Dino’ was released in theatres on July 4, 2025. The film received love from the audience. He is currently working on his next, starring Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela. Reportedly, its tentative title is ‘Aashiqui 3.’
On the other hand, Ranbir Kapoor will next star in ‘Ramayana.’ The film also features Sai Pallavi as the goddess Sita and Yash as Lankanaresh Ravana. He will share screen space with Vicky Kaushal and Alia Bhatt in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Love & War.’
