I shared this note with@OpenAItoday. Onward! After more than five and a half years, I am leaving OpenAl.It was an honor to serve as your CISO. I joined in 2020 as OpenAl’s first security hire, when the company was still a small research lab launching GPT-3 and an experimental API. Together, we built a security program that now protects a global platform trusted by hundreds of millions of users and some of the most important Al systems in the world. I’m deeply proud of what we collectively achieved: earning user trust, defining security for a new frontier, and showing that security can move at the speed of research.More recently, I had the privilege of leading security product development and research, culminating in the launch of Aardvark. Aardvark reflects some of my deepest beliefs about how Al can meaningfully improve how software is protected and defended. Helping bring that work into the world has been one of the most fulfilling chapters of my career. With Aardvark off the blocks, this feels like the right moment for me to move on. I leave knowing that the security program and Aardvark are in excellent hands, and that the work we started will continue to flourish and have impact. Most of all, thank you. Security is a team sport, and it has been an honor to play for this team. The rigor, creativity, and care you bring to your work made everything we achieved possible. I’m grateful to everyone who believed in OpenAl and our security mission when they were still just concepts, and for trusting me with the opportunity to serve. I’m especially grateful to everyone in the Security org, past and present: you inspired me every day, and it was a privilege to work alongside you.I’m proud of what we built together and am excited to see what you create next. As for me, I’m looking forward to exploring new ideas and opportunities. If you’d like to stay in touch, I’ll put my contact info below. Stay curious. Onward.Warmly, Matt
