Mohan G’s entry into the Kollywood world came with ‘Pazhaiya Vannarapettai,’ and he subsequently went on to direct movies like ‘Draupathi, ‘Rudra Thandavam,’ or ‘Bakasuran.’ All these years, he has successfully established his presence with strong political and social perspectives in his films. Particularly known for his ideological bias, director Mohan G has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons for depicting certain groups and communities and alternate versions of history in a controversial manner. The filmmaker has never backed down in the face of criticism, but stood by his views, boldly defending his film again and again at every given opportunity, including press interactions and public statements.
‘Draupathi 2 ‘ banned in Qatar
Mohan G is all set for his upcoming movie ‘Draupathi 2’ which still faced a lot of controversy even before it hit the theatres. ‘Draupathi 2’ was first in news when singer Chinmayi added that she would not have sung the song if she had known about it. This led to Mohan G demanding an apology from her, and eventually the song was recorded afresh with another singer. Now, an international angle has added fuel to the fire. After ‘Dhurandhar,’ the Qatar government has now banned ‘Draupathi’, directed by Mohan G, marking a significant setback for the film’s overseas prospects.
Not only Qatar, ‘Draupathi 2’ to be banned in multiple Islamic nations
As the countdown began, Mohan G unleashed a media attack, dragging all of his controversial statements back into the fray, and the result was more headlines with more controversies. A few things he said, especially the one where he compared film directors to the caste system, once again led to many online clashes. But on another note, Studio Flicks reported that ‘Draupathi 2’ was actually banned not only in Qatar but a few other Muslim countries as well. This is owing to the history that the movie portrays, with some allusion to the atrocities committed by Mughal kings on the Tamil population that the authorities feel is not really ideal.
‘Draupathi 2’ Tamil Nadu release still on track
The international ban and the continuing controversy have not discouraged the producers of ‘Draupathi 2’ from going ahead with the domestic release. Richard Rishi, who previously played the main lead in other films directed by Mohan G, has been cast again for the titular role.
