Kristi Noem and the US Department of Homeland Security are facing intense online backlash after a slogan displayed on her DHS podium was linked to a violent Nazi-era ideology. The controversy erupted after the phrase “One of ours. All of yours.” appeared during an January 8 press conference, just one day after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. The killing, which occurred while Good was seated in her vehicle on a residential street, has since become central to the outrage. Following the incident, Noem publicly labelled Good a “domestic terrorist,” a characterization that further inflamed criticism.
Is the phrase actually related to Nazi ideology?
While “One of ours. All of yours.” is not a verbatim Nazi slogan, it does, in fact, closely reflects a core Nazi principle used during World War II: collective punishment and disproportionate retaliation.During the war, the Nazi regime repeatedly treated the death of a single German as justification for the execution of dozens, or even hundreds, of civilians. One of the most infamous examples followed the 1942 assassination of SS officer Reinhard Heydrich. Adolf Hitler ordered the complete destruction of the Czech village of Lidice. Every male villager was executed, while women and children were deported or killed. By 1943, all 503 residents were gone.Similar policies were formally ordered by senior Nazi officials. Wilhelm Keitel, chief of the German High Command, issued directives stating that between 50 and 100 civilians should be executed for every German soldier killed by resistance fighters.A memorial now stands in the rebuilt village of Lidice, describing it as “a symbol of Fascist despotism in World War II.” It is thus argued that- where an in-group claims such dominance that harm to one member justifies catastrophic retribution—underpins some of the worst atrocities of the war. And the phrase to be highlighted just a day after Kristi Noem claimed that Renee Good tired to run over an ICE agent, seems disturbing and has outraged the netizens.
Public fury after ICE shooting and podium appearance
The appearance of the slogan on Noem’s podium, so soon after Renee Nicole Good’s killing, triggered widespread condemnation on social media. Commentators said the timing and message suggested a warning of retaliation rather than accountability. One user wrote, “his is NOT what I wanted to see first thing in the morning, but here we are. WAKE UP AMERICA!”Another said, “Well now, ‘One of Ours, All of Yours’? That’s tyrant talk, plain and simple. Burn a village for one dead man and call it justice? Hell, a good woman lies dead, and they’re preachin’ reprisal from a government podium. We ain’t occupiers—we’re supposed to be better than that.”A third added, “and still americans just argue online instead of actually revolting against the corrupt government… being led into thinking they hate each other when the true danger sits in Washington”A fourth even added, “Cosplaying Nazism.”
