From preparing sweets to arranging foods and ingredients for donating and offering to the Sun God has already added on to the festive zeal. it is believed that offering specific foods to the Sun God (Surya Dev) on this day can attract good luck, prosperity, and good health.
Til
Til, also known as Sesame seeds is considered to be one of the most pious offerings. This is why it is not just prepared as a sweet, but is also offered to the Sun God and donated and distributed among people. It is believed that offering Til to the Sun God can cleanse negative energies and bring positivity to life.

Jaggery (Gur)
Gud, also known as Jaggery adds sweetness, purity, and harmony in life, and offering it to the Sun God on the occasion of Makar Sankranti signifies gratitude, warmth, energy, and sustenance. Moreover, it is believed to help add sweetness to life and relationships, reduce bitterness from one’s life and ensure a healthy year ahead.
Sugarcane and Sugar
Another thing that is offered to Sun God on this day is Sugarcane or sweets made with sugar. This is because sugarcane is associated with sweetness, growth, and endurance and offering sugarcane or sugar-based foods symbolises resilience and a sweet future ahead. It also brings in the Sun’s energy in nurturing crops and sustaining life. This offering is believed to attract happiness, success, and steady progress.
Khichdi
As per vedic traditions, rice is believed to be the most pious offering so much so that it is also considered as God’s own food. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti one can prepare and offer Rice-moong dal Khichdi to the Sun God after taking a dip in the holy water. It can also be donated to the needy. It is believed that chanting Gayatri mantra on this day after offering helps bring good luck and also pacifies Pitta dosha.
