India’s automobile market in 2025 threw up an interesting mix of winners, despite a continued demand for SUVs. Electric vehicle sales were topped by an electric crossover while a compact sedan topped overall sales in the year 2025.Leading the electric vehicle space was the MG Windsor, which emerged as India’s best-selling EV of 2025. JSW MG Motor India sold over 46,735 units of the Windsor during the calendar year, making it the first OEM in the country to achieve such volumes with a single electric four-wheeler. The model maintained strong momentum throughout the year, averaging close to 4,000 units a month and recording the highest month-on-month sales among EVs.The Windsor’s success contributed significantly to MG’s overall electric push. JSW MG Motor India closed CY2025 with a 19 percent growth in overall sales, while EV volumes grew sharply by 111 percent over CY2024.
It is offered with a BaaS starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh, along with a usage cost of Rs 3.9 per km. The electric motor produces 136 PS and 200 Nm of torque. While EVs made headlines, the overall sales crown for 2025 went to a familiar nameplate. The Maruti Dzire finished the calendar year as India’s best-selling car, with 2.14 lakh units dispatched. This achievement is particularly significant in a year dominated by SUVs, showing that compact sedans still command strong demand when they deliver on efficiency and low ownership costs.Priced from Rs 6.26 lakh, ex-showroom, the Dzire continues to appeal to a wide range of buyers. Fuel efficiency remains one of its biggest strengths, with claimed figures of 24.79 kmpl for the petrol manual, 25.71 kmpl for the petrol AMT, and 33.73 km/kg for the CNG variant. Meanwhile, in the two-wheeler space, models such as the Hero Splendor and Honda Activa continued to lead the charts.
