MEERUT: Two days after the murder of a 50-year-old Dalit woman and the abduction of her daughter from Kapsad village in Meerut on Thursday, police traced the alleged killer, Paras Som (23), in Haridwar on Saturday. According to the police, the woman was also recovered safely.Without elaborating on the details, SSP Meerut Vipin Tada told TOI, “As of now, we can only confirm the recovery of the woman, who is safe and sound, and the youth involved in the murder of her mother was arrested in Haridwar. It is a sense of relief that the woman was unharmed. It was a joint operation by Saharanpur and Meerut police. The rest of the details will be revealed after further investigations.”An uneasy calm prevailed in Kapsad village in Meerut throughout Saturday, where the woman was killed while trying to protect her 20-year-old daughter from 2 men who eventually abducted her.Heavy security forces prevented several political leaders from visiting the family. On Saturday, Ramji Lal Suman, Rajya Sabha MP from the Samajwadi Party, and MLA from the Sardhana constituency, Atul Pradhan, were stopped at the Partapur toll, leading to jostling with the police force.Bhim Army Chief and MP from Nagina Chandrashekhar Azad, who was trying to cross UP Gate at Dasna (Ghaziabad), was chased by hundreds of policemen and was stopped from going further, though the Dalit politician tried to run away from the security agencies on foot and later on a bike.A Congress delegation led by West UP President Pradeep Narwal was also stopped at a Meerut-based barricade on Saturday. “This is so ironical that the killers are roaming scot-free and police are stopping those who wish to show solidarity with the aggrieved family. We came here in the morning and the authorities are just playing delaying tactics. It is over 50 hours since the crime happened and police are clueless. If the perpetrator was a Dalit or from a minority community, bulldozers would demolish their homes. Why is it not happening now?” said Narwal.Interestingly, the local administration allowed BJP politicians to visit the aggrieved family. Harender Malik, Lok Sabha MP and ex MLA from Sardhana Sangeet, visited the family on Saturday.Meanwhile, anger kept rising in the village against the police “inaction and attempt to confine the family within the house”. “Police failed to arrest the murderers of my mother even after 2 days. Those coming to meet us and share our grief are also being stopped. In fact, we are also not being allowed to go outside. The cops in our lane do not respond to our queries. They gave 48 hours and still nothing happened,” said the deceased’s son.
