BENGALURU: Central Crime Branch (CCB) police registered a case against a woman, identified as Shamshad Begum, and her associates for allegedly duping job aspirants of Rs 5.3 crore by promising them work in govt departments. Begum claimed to be general secretary of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Mahila Morcha.The complaint was filed by Sangamesh Rachaiah, a resident of Vijayapura district, who accused Begum and her father, MM Mansoor Ahmed, of cheating him. He alleged they met him in a Bengaluru hotel, flaunted their political connections and showed him their photographs with ministers and politicians, along with fake identity cards. They promised Group D posts in different govt departments in exchange for money.
Begum introduced Mansoor Ahmed as a joint secretary of KPCC. Sangamesh alleged he was introduced to Ramesh, who claimed to be a health department officer. At Karnataka Examinations Authority office, they introduced him to Sharath. The accused promised to provide jobs to aspirants who paid money. Money for jobsSangamesh introduced 14 candidates to Begum and Mansoor. The accused allegedly collected Rs 56 lakh in cash, promising jobs in irrigation, health and social welfare departments. They issued fake admit cards and falsely claimed a special examination would be conducted for candidates after the regular exam. Begum claimed she had influence in railways and collected about Rs 1.6 crore from seven candidates to appoint them ticket collectors and commercial clerks. The candidates were sent fake appointment letters via email. She also claimed there would be a three-month training at a location around 40km from Kolkata, followed by another three months of training near Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. On Oct 23, 2023, she collected Rs 30 lakh in cash from Sangamesh’s friend, promising him a job as tax assistant in the income-tax department. Another Rs 20 lakh was collected online from two candidates by promising Group D posts in the water resources department. They were also issued fake appointment letters.Sangamesh accused Begum of cheating nine more candidates of Rs 30.5 lakh by promising jobs in the central govt’s survey service department and the railways.Sangamesh himself lost Rs 5 lakh as Begum gave him a fake identity card, falsely showing his appointment as an airport member and adviser.He accused her of cheating Jamkhandi RTO inspector Shanmukhappa Tirtha — who was raided by the Lokayukta — of Rs 68 lakh (Rs 25 lakh in cash and Rs 43 lakh in multiple transactions). Sangamesh approached CCB’s deputy commissioner of police on Dec 18 and filed a complaint. A case was registered under sections of Indian Penal Code, including cheating, criminal breach of trust and forgery of documents.
