The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday cancelled the scheduled double-header of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as a mark of respect following the death of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia earlier in the day.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!The decision was announced just a few hours before the first match, which was to feature Sylhet Titans against Chattogram Royals at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The evening fixture between Dhaka Capitals and Rangpur Riders, also slated for the same venue, was likewise called off. The BCB said both matches will be rescheduled, with revised dates to be communicated in due course.
In a statement, the BCB paid tribute to Zia’s contribution to the sport. “The BCB recalls with gratitude her constant blessings and good wishes for the progress of cricket in this country,” the board said. It added that during her tenure as Prime Minister, Zia provided “outstanding support for the development of cricket in Bangladesh,” helping strengthen infrastructure and promote the game nationwide.“In respect of the nation’s mourning and in honour of Begum Khaleda Zia’s legacy, today’s scheduled BPL matches have been cancelled and will be rescheduled,” the statement read.Begum Khaleda Zia passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 80. According to a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) statement, she died around 6 am local time, shortly after the Fajr prayer. Zia had been undergoing treatment for multiple ailments.
