Former England Cricketer Hugh Morris has passed away at the age of 62 after a long battle with bowel cancer. His death was announced on Sunday 28 December 2025. Long before his fight with bowel cancer, Hugh Morris has already survived throat cancer. While Hugh Morris had great contributions in the English cricket world, his health journey highlights the resilience of cancer survivors.
Then and now: Hugh Morris’ battle with cancer
After his retirement, Hugh Morris was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2002. According to Glamorgancricket.com, in December 2002 Hugh was diagnosed with throat cancer having discovered a lump on the side of his neck whilst shaving. After an Oxford specialist had overseen a series of operations, the medics discovered the primary tumour in one of Hugh’s tonsils and he subsequently had a bilateral neck dissection which removed all of his glands. The treatment was followed by a “grueling” course of radiotherapy and plastic surgery. This phase of Morris’ life marked the possibility of recovery and long-term survival after cancer treatment. He had recovered by 2007 and returned to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as managing director.
In 2022, another battle with cancer knocked Morris’ door, when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Over time, Morris’s bowel cancer progressed and spread to his liver. Dan Cherry, Hugh Morris’ successor as the Glamorgan’s CEO said, “ The last few years have been extremely difficult for him and his family, but we were pleased to see Hugh several times during the 2025 season here at Sophia Gardens. I know that the fact that our Men’s team won promotion to the First Division of the Rothesay County Championship, and our Women’s team began their existence by reaching the final of their 50-overs competition put a smile on Hugh’s face as he was undergoing a difficult course of treatment.” The former India cricketer Ravi Shastri, who played alongside Morris at Glamorgan, said: “Really gutted to hear of the passing of teammate and captain Hugh Morris. Baanas, God bless your soul. You were honest in whatever you did, and did a bloody good job. Heartfelt condolences to the family.” Hugh Morris will be remembered not only as a respected cricketer and administrator, but also as a symbol of courage, perseverance, and grace. Hugh Morris’ life story stands as a testament to resilience, both on and off the field.
