‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, the highly anticipated James Cameron film that is just days away from its release, will reportedly mark the end of the first chapter in the blockbuster franchise. Buzz about the Sully family’s chapter coming to an end, came to light after the filmmaker revealed in a recent interview, that the third film should not just be viewed as a sequel, but as the culmination of a long-planned narrative arc.
End of first Avatar saga
Speaking to io9, he said, “I don’t think of ‘Fire and Ash’ as a sequel. I think it was a culmination of a saga.” He went on to explain that the first three films were conceived as one unified story and added, “I like ‘saga’ better than ‘sequel’ because a lot of where we were going with the story was in the original architecture of the story. So if you think of this as the third act, I think that’s healthier.”Explaining his approach which is non-typical of Hollywood franchising he explained, “It’s a long game. I went into it knowing that we’d be playing a long game and betting that the audience would come along with us and care about these people. Because they may be 10 feet tall and blue, but they’re people.”
‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’ in the works
With this new revelation, fans have been left wondering what would be in store for the rest of the ‘Avatar’ saga, considering that ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’ have been announced and scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031. Acknowledging the uncertainty about the franchise’s future, he did mention that the upcoming films are “its own saga.”“It’s got a beginning and a middle and an end that plays out across these two films. They’re vaporware right now,” he shared.
