Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee recently found himself at the centre of controversy following an exchange at the trailer launch of his upcoming Hindi film Maalik. The actor’s response to a journalist sparked an online backlash. He was heard asking the reporter, “Why do you need to talk in Bengali?” when the reporter raised a question about Prosenjit’s views on his role in Maalik and his reaction to Rajkummar Rao portraying cricketer Sourav Ganguly in a biopic. Prosenjit took to Instagram to clarify his remark. He explained that his words had been misinterpreted and stripped of context. “A few days ago, a sentence of mine went viral on social media. I want to say something about it.” He wrote the long statement in Bengali and elaborated that the event was predominantly conducted in English, due to which he hesitated to respond in Bengali, fearing that some members of the audience wouldn’t grasp the full meaning. “But at that moment I felt that if I answered in Bengali, many people might not understand the correct meaning,” he stated.Prosenjit Chatterjee expressed sorrow over the backlashChatterjee expressed sorrow over any offence caused. “Since only that one sentence has been shared on social media, perhaps many people were offended by the literal meaning of that statement,” he said.He further added, “Bengali is the language of my life, of love. Disrespecting your own mother tongue — I can’t even dream of doing that.
