KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: Two young nurses – one female and one male – at a private hospital in Barasat were hospitalised with symptoms of Nipah virus. The condition of the two was critical, sources said. Both the nurses are being treated in the hospital’s isolation ward. Sources said the samples taken from the duo tested positive at AIIMS-Kalyani. The state health department has sent the samples to NIV Pune for reconfirmation. The Union health secretary reviewed the situation with senior state officials to ensure quick and coordinated measures. A National Joint Outbreak Response Team has been rushed to Bengal. The team, which includes experts from All India Institute of Health and Public Hygiene and National Institute of Virology,is assessing the situation. An official said the two nurses had no significant history of travel to other states. Union health minister JP Nadda has assured chief minister Mamata Banerjee of full support.
